MSBPL TAB Newsletter

This Newsletter will tell you what is going on for teens at our library, what is new in our YA collection, and will in general be an outlet for expression by the teens in the Somerset, PA area. If you are between the ages of 13 and 18 you can help create this newsletter and shape teen services at the Mary S. Biesecker Public Library in two ways:

1. You can join TAB and have a direct say in what we do.

2. You can write or e-mail us with your thoughts, requests, and stories. (tony@maryslibrary.com

TAB Needs Submissions

MSBPL is putting forth a concerted effort to include young adults in our library services. In that light, the Teen Advisory Board is putting together a Teen Library Newsletter. If you don't have time to join TAB, but you like to write or create art then by all means send us some of the following and we may consider adding it to the newsletter:

Poetry

Short Stories

Creative Non-Fiction

Submission Guidelines

To submit you must be between the ages of 13-18, and you must be a resident of Somerset County. All submissions must be accompanied by a submission release form signed by the author/artist and one of their parents or guardians. (click here for submission release)

Submissions may be sent by way of postal service or e-mail. The guidelines for each is as follows:

Post - Send your submission, a cover letter telling us a little bit about yourself, a self-addressed stamped envelope (if you would like a reply), and don't forget to include the signed submission release form to:

E-mail - In the body of your e-mail type your introduction and cover letter. Send your submission as a Word Document attachment. Sign the submission release and then scan it and attach it to your e-mail in PDF or jpeg format. Send it to:

Notes:

Submissions will not be returned. Do not send originals unless you do not need them anymore. Send high quality copies instead.

Submission does not guarantee acceptance and publication. Each submission will be reviewed by the TAB Advisor as well as each member of Teen Advisory Board. If you would like a say in what is published join us. We do our best to inform contributors whether or not their piece has been accepted in a timely fashion.

We cannot publish anything that uses profanity (cursing/swearing) or anything pornographic.

Art - We are looking for pictures created using any media (pencil, ink, paint, computers, photographs, and etc). The piece must be the original work of the teen submitting it. Art must be no larger than 4"x7" (dimensions may run either direction.)

Comic Strips - Send us your original comic strips. Be sure that your title, byline, and comic are all complete we will not add any of this for you. And, be sure that your strips are no larger than 4"x7". (Check out your local funny pages for examples.)

Poetry - We want poetry of any style (rhyming, free verse, haiku, and etc.) To be considered, poetry must be 40 lines or less. It can be about anything you like.

Short Stories - Short stories must be 1,500 words or less, and may be of any genre.

Creative Non-Fiction - CNF must be 1,500 words or less. This type of submission must be about a teen or group of teens, other than that you can write what you wish. (CNF is factually accurate prose about real people and events. Writing about something factual in a vivid compelling manner.)

News Stories - Journalistic submissions must be 1,000 words or less and include at least one picture of the subject in question. These stories should be about something good that a local teen is doing or about issues that concern local teens.
